about aileen
i’ve been a student of yoga for over thirty years, a teacher for over twenty five.
my initial training was within the iyengar system. over the last fifteen to twenty years my practice and teaching has been most inspired by the work of donna farhi, judith hanson lasater and amy matthews. i have sought the highest quality training i know of, and i’m deeply grateful to these teachers whose extraordinary work dives more deeply and broadly than much of the current mainstream in yoga training and have offered so much to the field.
prior to any content, it’s my intention to hold a safe and relaxed learning environment. we need to feel safe to feel curious, and we need to feel curious to learn. to join the flow of the now in the body, there’s usually some slowing down required, and a gathering of attention. a subtler, kinder, wilder experience emerges when we allow curiosity to lead us. movement then feels creative, full, necessary!
i began practising before the internet, before they made yoga mats! in my thirty plus years of practice, yoga has become ubiquitous and multifarious. often sold as physical exercise or switch off/chillout, yoga can be these things, if you like. for me, it’s the underlying quality of attention, entering present moment experience, that makes any movement or resting, yoga. rather than any sense of controlling oneself, or wanting to “get it right”, i hope to encourage students to discover and participate in the thrill of allowing integrated movement to emerge, rather than directing it from the outside.
fundamental anatomical principles and an understanding of human development patterns as innate templates for rich, integrated movement inform the way i teach. i remain committed to my personal practice and ongoing learning, and teach from what i have integrated and understand in an embodied way.
donna farhi is recognised as one of the world’s most valued and respected yoga teachers. i completed her advanced teacher training in 2007, subsequently assisting on several uk intensives, and co-hosting three of her edinburgh intensives.
i have a particular interest in and love of restorative yoga and completed advanced level training in 2015 with judith hanson lasater, world leader in this field.
amy matthews' skills and qualification are broad and deep. i am particularly grateful for her teaching on embodied anatomy, human developmental movement patterns, and the body's systems'. i have a richer, more integrated experience of yoga practice through these teachings.
from the off, and starting long ago with well worn tape cassettes, i have been an informal student of buddhist teachings, later of non-violent communication. now, these feel a natural part of an integrated practice which is essentially meditative and where kindness and compassion are central.
